Diary/Diario March: Week
2 Monday – 3-7 First day of classes and I was very nervous. I did bring my camera but was so nervous that I didn't record anything. Actually the professor spoke very slowly and I understood most of it. After discussing a little of the class he let us discuss what we had learned in prior classes. This is where I became a little lost. They students were rattling off so fast that I really only got the main idea and I suppose thats important...but still....I have a lotta work ahead of me. I figured I'd watch tv to strengthen my listening skills, so now I get to be a TV junky. ALLLRIGHT....except there isnt anything on here! haha. Also the teacher had us introduce ourselves...that was a daunting task because I had to do it in Spanish but it was ok i guess. I suppose I didnt say my name clearly enough and they were like what?? amidst some were laughing...I probably said some curse word....Much later Mary and I went to the registro civil where one can apply for a chilean ID...but i'll get to that tomorrow. Tuesday - 3-8 First thing in the morning we went back to get our IDs...after 2 hours of waiting b/c of the multitude of people that were there we finally applied....we'll have to go back to get the real id on the 23rd....and then we have to get our student ID after this....which we need to check out books from the library...so how am i gonnna check out books! Stupid chilean IDs...why do we need so many...and if i'd known that it was gonna take so long I woulda come here a month early. Anyways I'm done venting about that...now on to another subject I will vent....We went to a class but the schedule was written down incorrectly and we missed class. so we went to the professor and he told us that the class would be too hard for us and we would have too many problems and pretty much rejected mary and i from taking the class. So now I have to find one more classs...I still have 2 but the literature class looks tough cuz its based on previous classes....soo what am I supposed to know? the prof has to know that we foreigners know nothing of literature of chile.....I hope he understands that. I guess tomorrow i'm going shopping for some clothes I need b/c its really starting to get colder here. Especially at night. I'm off to watch tv so i'll write another journal tomorrow. Wednesday - 3-9 After my literature class I came to find out that the teachers of one of the two classes I had did not want me in his class because it's hard enough for native chileans here. I now had to find 2 classes instead of one and it was back to square one again. Only this time around I was really mad....The problem is I can't just choose any class that I want. I have to email my profesor/advisor at CMU to see what classes I can take. Basically I emailed her with a list of classses that are being offered because she keeps telling me to sign up for classes that are currently not offered this semester. This was also exacerbated by the fact that she's on spring break so she can't just pop into her office anytime she wants. I'm still waiting for her response. Thursday - 3-10 I told my family about my situation and they decided to let my sister rocio go with me because she could explain the situation better to those in charge of enrolling my classes. I finally got an email from marcela my advisor with a bunch of options. After working with my advisor of the chilean university mauricio we finally found 2 more classes that I could enroll in. I emailed this schedule to marcela and am waiting for her response. Friday - 3-11 Today I went to check my email because I wanted to know if the classes I choose were adequate. No response yet. After returning to my house, my aunt ligia wanted to take me to the public library. Its not like a library we would have here. It's built out of an older house which is a nice touch. I found one book about alexander the great and I have already read about 15 pages. I want to try to read about a chapter or 2 per week depending on time...It takes a little longer for me to read one page of spanish than one page of english. I was antsy to discover what marcela would have to say about my schedule so I went to the internet cafe but it was full! arrrggg.....since it was 4 I knew i'd have to wait until monday to schedule, because the offices would close at 5. Thats ok though....cuz I still havent gotten a response from my advisor yet. Saturday - 3-12 I got right up and ran about 2 miles today. I also ran pretty hard yesterday. I want to keep it up because I have plenty of time to do so. I really like it here so far, although I have discovered a few annoyances. One being the incessant hammering from the house being built behind me..It can be a good alarm clock though since the one I bought DOESNT WORK. hhhahahahaha. I read about 20 more pages of alexander the great and am actually learning and retaining the info that i've read in spanish...that can be hard sometimes. Around 3 I played cards with Rocio for a long time. We mainly played poker, and I won everytime except twice. Guess thats the myer luck? I came to find out that we like a lot of the same music...she even likes EMINEM. ahahahhaha....pearl jam, cranberries, and stone temple pilots were among her other favorites. A little while later some family members came over and we all sat down to eat las onze...literally the eleven...a snach that one would eat at 11ish...but really more around 7-9. Anyways, they were jumping around from topic to other topics that I had no background info on....so I'm totally lost when that happens. I hate it, but within two months I will catch on hopefully. Also I went to check my email but I still got no response. I'm just gonna enroll on monday if I don't hear anything from my advisor. Sunday - 3-13 nothing happened today! because its a day of rest. check back next week.
